Neil Thompson - '1950s Roller Coaster Show'
01:00 & 13:00 Hrs daily GMT

Photo of Neil Thompson I first got into 50s Rock 'n' Roll in 1976 when a friend of mine gave me two Gene Vincent 78s that belonged to his Dad. I was hooked from that day. It was great timing because this was the year of the Rock 'n' Roll revival. All of Gene's six albums were re-released in France and I bought them all on import. I also started buying Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley. These were the four main rockers in my record collection

In 1981, for the first time in my life, I didn't like what was happening in music and I certainly wasn't going to buy Spandau Ballet or Duran Duran records -this is when I started getting seriously into other rock 'n' rollers especially Jerry Lee Lewis. This got me into Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins etc and my record collection just started filling up with different rock 'n' roll albums - Buddy Knox, Ronnie Hawkins, Fats Domino, Little Richard etc.

I started doing DJ work in 2004. At first I did 60s and 70s nights but as the years went on the pubs were filling up with more and more kids who would ask for modern music and I stopped enjoying it so it was with relief that I was offered some work doing 50s rock 'n' roll nights in East London a few years later. This got my enthusiasm back and I carry on doing them to this day.

My programme, 50s Roller Coaster, features music from 1950 to 1959 and now and then I slip in a 40s record (Louis Jordan, Ella Mae Morse, Nellie Lutcher etc). I stick to records that were released in the UK. Most of the ones I play were released in the 50s but I also play the ones that weren't released in the UK at the time but were eventually released in the 60s and early 70s. I always make sure I have plenty of greats in my show - Fats Domino, The Platters, Bill Haley, Gene Vincent, Elvis Presley etc

My show is on at 1 o'clock AM and PM every day with the new show always being aired on Saturday. Why not tune in? - I'm sure I'll play some of your favourites!
